Ukraine TPS reaches its last listed day on October 19, 2026. For someone who depends on Temporary Protected Status to work, this date may affect whether an employer accepts a work document. It may also affect whether a pending filing needs attention. It may show which longer-term immigration options need review. USCIS lists Ukraine as designated for TPS through October 19, 2026, on its Temporary Protected Status Designated Country: Ukraine page.

TPS under Ukraine’s designation allows eligible individuals to apply for protection and employment authorization for a limited period. It is not a green card. People with Ukraine TPS who need to review their records or possible next steps can speak with our immigration attorneys about federal immigration options.

What happened to Ukraine TPS?

USCIS currently lists October 19, 2026, as the end of Ukraine’s TPS designation period. The agency updated its Ukraine TPS page on September 3, 2026. That page names Federal Register notices at 90 FR 5936 and 88 FR 56872. Readers can use these references to find the published notices about the designation.

The timeline matters because several earlier filing periods have ended. USCIS set a re-registration period from January 17, 2025, through March 18, 2025. USCIS also listed an initial registration period under Ukraine’s designation effective October 20, 2023. That period ran from August 21, 2023, through April 19, 2025.

USCIS instructed people who held TPS under Ukraine’s designation and wanted to keep it to re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that ran from Jan. 17, 2025, through March 18, 2025. That period has closed.

The agency’s page also explains work authorization documents during the designation period. A person whose TPS registration was approved and who filed Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, could receive an EAD with an October 19, 2026 expiration date. The person had to pay the fee or receive approval for a fee waiver.

An EAD is an Employment Authorization Document. It is a card that shows permission to work in the United States. For many households, the main issue is not the name of an immigration status. The issue is whether an employer, benefits agency, or family understands what an EAD and a USCIS notice prove. USCIS says eligible TPS holders may use certain EADs with a USCIS notice as proof of continued work authorization through October 19, 2026.

Which filing periods are already closed?

The listed Ukraine TPS re-registration period closed on March 18, 2025. The listed initial registration period closed on April 19, 2025. These dates still matter when someone reviews a filing history. They matter especially when a person believes an application or work authorization request was filed during an earlier registration period.

Who can rely on Ukraine TPS and EAD extension proof?

USCIS sets specific residence and physical-presence rules for Ukraine TPS. Continuous residence means living in the United States without a break that violates the rule. USCIS lists continuous residence in the United States since August 16, 2023. It also lists continuous physical presence in the United States since October 20, 2023. Continuous physical presence means being in the United States without a disqualifying break. Eligibility also depends on the TPS requirements that apply to the individual applicant.

USCIS describes automatic EAD extension proof for certain people. The person must remain eligible for TPS. The person must not have received a renewal EAD. The person must also have a pending TPS-based Form I-765. A pending case is one that USCIS has not finished deciding. The person may receive a notice by mail and electronically through a myUSCIS account. The relevant EAD categories are A-12 or C-19.

Unless your TPS has been withdrawn or your Form I-765 denied, you may show your EAD indicating a Category of A12 or C19, with a Card Expires date of April 19, 2025, or Oct. 19, 2023 on the front of the card and the Notice to any U.S. employer as proof of identity and continued employment authorization through Oct. 19, 2026.

USCIS also identifies another group. This group includes a person who filed Form I-765 during one of the last Ukraine TPS re-registration periods. The person must remain eligible. The person must also have an EAD that expires before the designation period ends. That person may receive a notice. For this group, the page describes EADs bearing A12 or C19. It lists a card expiration date on or after April 20, 2026, and before October 19, 2026.

Employers are not the only people who may review the notice. USCIS says federal, state, or local benefit-granting agencies may also accept it. They may accept it when a person applies for benefits. Keep the physical card and USCIS notice together. A photograph alone may not answer an employer’s document-review questions.

What does TPS not do by itself?

Key Statistics and Data for Ukraine TPS Reaches Its Last Listed Day on October 19, 2026

USCIS directs people who seek lawful permanent status to review Green Card Eligibility Categories. USCIS also says some people may qualify for other immigration options. A TPS grant alone does not establish eligibility for any of them.

In our experience, people often ask first whether a work document remains usable. They then ask whether a separate immigration path can protect the family after the temporary designation ends. These questions should be reviewed separately. One answer does not automatically resolve the other.

Under 8 CFR 244.5(b), USCIS may issue work authorization documents as appropriate during a TPS registration period.

A separate rule may matter greatly to someone considering asylum. Asylum is protection for a person who fears persecution in the person’s home country. USCIS states that being granted and maintaining TPS until a reasonable period before filing an asylum application is an extraordinary circumstance for the asylum filing deadline. An extraordinary circumstance is a serious reason that may excuse a late filing. The regulation is 8 CFR 208.4(a)(5)(iv).

USCIS explains that being granted and maintaining TPS until a reasonable period before the filing of the asylum application is considered an extraordinary circumstance for the purposes of the one-year filing deadline. This applies if the one-year clock has not already expired.

Why should a person separate TPS from other applications?

Form I-821 is the Application for Temporary Protected Status. Form I-765 is the Application for Employment Authorization. USCIS also lists Form I-131 for travel documents, Form I-912 for fee waivers, and Form I-601 for certain inadmissibility waivers.

People considering a green card should review the correct category before acting. For a family-based route, that review may include the relationship and petition process. For asylum, the timing review may require close attention to the person’s arrival date, earlier filings, and maintenance of TPS. Our federal immigration legal team can explain how these processes may overlap. The team will not assume that one application resolves every issue.

What should Ukraine TPS holders do now?

October 19, 2026, is a date to organize records. It is not a date on which to rely on assumptions. Start by finding the latest Form I-797 notice. Also find every Form I-821 receipt or approval notice. Find every Form I-765 receipt, approval, or denial notice. Put EADs and extension notices in the same file.

Next, compare the EAD category and expiration date with the USCIS instructions. USCIS identifies A-12 and C-19 categories for the extension arrangements described on its Ukraine TPS page. If an employer or benefits agency asks for proof, provide the card and USCIS notice together. Do this when the USCIS instructions apply.

Then check the myUSCIS account and mailing address. USCIS says it sends relevant EAD extension notices by mail. It also sends them electronically to people with a myUSCIS account. An outdated address can cause avoidable uncertainty when someone needs a notice.

Finally, review longer-term paths early and carefully. USCIS points TPS holders to its Explore My Options and Green Card Eligibility Categories resources. A person considering asylum should examine the timing rule in 8 CFR 208.4(a)(5)(iv). The person should also review the facts needed to support an asylum claim. A person with a qualifying family relationship may need to assess a family-based petition separately from TPS.

If someone charges a fee to prepare immigration forms, verify that the person may provide legal advice. USCIS warns that only an attorney or an accredited representative working for a Department of Justice recognized organization can give immigration legal advice. An accredited representative is a person authorized to provide immigration help through a recognized organization.

What should Ukraine TPS holders watch next?

USCIS lists Ukraine’s TPS designation through October 19, 2026. People should monitor the USCIS Ukraine TPS page for agency updates, filing instructions, and work authorization information. The Federal Register citations, 90 FR 5936 and 88 FR 56872, also identify the underlying notices.

The current TPS designation for Ukraine is through October 19, 2026.

Do not wait for a workplace question before finding the right documents. Keep copies of USCIS notices. Check account messages. Keep proof of every filing. If Form I-765 remains pending, the USCIS Processing Times tool may help people review general processing information. They should also review their individual case updates.

Process Timeline for Ukraine TPS Reaches Its Last Listed Day on October 19, 2026

For people whose future plans involve asylum or permanent residence, careful preparation creates options. TPS can be one part of an immigration strategy. It should not be the only record a family keeps. It should not be the only status a family reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ukraine TPS canceled on October 19, 2026?

USCIS lists Ukraine as designated for TPS through October 19, 2026. The agency page identifies that date as the end of the listed designation period. People should review official USCIS updates and their own notices rather than assume that an EAD or a prior filing creates immigration protection beyond the period shown by USCIS.

Can I use my Ukraine TPS EAD after its printed expiration date?

USCIS describes extension arrangements for eligible people with A-12 or C-19 EADs and a USCIS notice. Eligibility depends on continued TPS eligibility and other conditions stated by USCIS. The card and notice work together as proof through October 19, 2026, unless TPS was withdrawn or Form I-765 was denied.

What are the Ukraine TPS residence requirements?

USCIS lists continuous residence in the United States since August 16, 2023, and continuous physical presence since October 20, 2023. These are key threshold requirements, but they are not the only TPS requirements. A person’s complete immigration history and application record can affect eligibility.

Can TPS help with the asylum filing deadline?

USCIS explains that maintaining TPS until a reasonable period before filing can qualify as an extraordinary circumstance under 8 CFR 208.4(a)(5)(iv). This can stop the clock on the asylum one-year filing requirement if the clock had not already expired. It does not decide whether the asylum claim itself will be granted.

Can I apply for a green card because I have Ukraine TPS?

TPS alone is not a green card category. USCIS directs applicants to review Green Card Eligibility Categories and other immigration options. A person may need an independent basis, such as an eligible family-based or employment-based category, and must meet all requirements for that category.

Who can give me legal advice about Ukraine TPS?

USCIS warns people to avoid immigration scams. According to USCIS, immigration legal advice may come from an attorney or an accredited representative working for a Department of Justice recognized organization. Before paying anyone, verify the person’s authorization and retain copies of every form, receipt, and notice.
