K-1 Fiancé Visa Process: Step-by-Step Timeline
For couples separated by borders, the K-1 fiancé visa offers a path to be together in the United States and build a life through marriage. The process has clear rules and firm deadlines, and understanding the timeline from the start helps couples avoid costly missteps. Here is how the K-1 visa generally works, step by step.

K-1 Eligibility Requirements
The K-1 visa is for the fiancé of a U.S. citizen. To qualify, the couple generally must show:
- The petitioner is a U.S. citizen (lawful permanent residents cannot file a K-1 petition).
- The couple has met in person within the two years before filing, unless a narrow exception applies.
- Both are legally free to marry (any prior marriages properly ended).
- They intend to marry within 90 days of the fiancé's entry into the United States.

Step One: The Form I-129F Petition
The process begins when the U.S. citizen files Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), with USCIS. This petition establishes the relationship and the intent to marry. Supporting evidence typically includes proof the couple has met, photographs, and statements about the relationship. Once approved, the petition moves to the next stage.
Step Two: Consular Processing and the Interview
After USCIS approval, the case is sent to the National Visa Center and then to the U.S. embassy or consulate in the fiancé's country. The fiancé completes the visa application, undergoes a medical examination, and attends a consular interview. If the visa is approved, the fiancé receives a K-1 visa to travel to the United States.

The fiancé enters the United States on K-1 status. From the date of entry, the couple has 90 days to marry. This deadline is firm; if the couple does not marry within 90 days, the K-1 status cannot simply be extended, and the fiancé is expected to depart. Planning the wedding date around this window is essential.
Step Four: Adjusting Status
After the marriage, the foreign spouse can apply to adjust status to lawful permanent resident (a green card) using Form I-485. Because the marriage will be relatively new, the green card is often granted on a conditional basis initially, with a later step to remove those conditions. Processing times vary, so we point clients to current information at /resources/processing-times rather than promising a specific timeline.
